The USA PATRIOT ACT
An act that was signed into Law after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, October 26, 2001. Isn’t it strange to you that an unknown, pre-written, 300 plus page document that limits many different freedoms of privacy for Americans just happened to become a United States Congress act passed only one month and 15 days after the September 11th terrorist attacks? The freedoms it limits are those such as immigrant’s rights to privacy in their home. It allows the Federal Bureau of investigation search personal records, finances, emails, text messages, phone activity and even search immigrant’s homes without a court order without being notified.
It also gives the federal bureau the same right to search U.S. citizens personal information, finances, etc. with any suspicion of criminal or terrorist activity also without a court order or notice. Since its passage, several legal challenges have been brought against the act, and Federal courts have ruled that a number of provisions are unconstitutional. A very important aspect of the Patriot Act also is the ability for the FBI and Judges to issues warrants for retrieving wire taped information such as emails and phone calls with a simple court ordered search warrant with any simple “hunch” of endangerment to “life or limb”. Many of the communication corporation provided the information for the FBI and allowed the disclosure of private information to the Federal Bureau. Many of you had no clue about this, did you?
